Daily Garden: 70’s Market Garden

March 1, 2010

70's window garden cans and containers plants

I found this over at desire to inspire…and it came from The Apartment Book, by the editors of Apartment Life magazine, Meredith Corporation, 1980.  This market can garden, created in a bedroom no less, makes me smile.  I  grew up in an house with lots of plants – perhaps not this extreme, but there was always some broken branch being rooted on the window sill — to create even more plants.    I wish I had a nice collection of old tins; as kitsch and OTT as this garden is, there is something so familiar about it that I like.  Do you remember the 70’s and gardens like this?

Oh, heavens yes, I remember those! And the houseplants in macrame hangers.

The DIY books of that era were heavily slanted towards growing things in recycled containers, and growing things in the windows was part of the back to the land movement that everyone could take part in. That picture really brings back memories! (why, yes, I *am* old)
