50 Natives: Kansas – Agropyron smithii – Western Wheatgrass

April 27, 2010

I am so interested in varieties of grass that I can plant broadcast style that will hopefully choke out a bit of fern, a fair amount of poison ivy and an ever increasing amount of wild raspberry.   This Kansas prairie native grass is definitely one I am considering for the lower pasture area of our little farm.

Western wheatgrass is a native cool-season, sod forming grass that grows best on moist bottomland. (check) It is drought resistant and winter hardy. (yeah!) And the fall color is sometimes shades of red.  (~nice~)

What I most desire though – besides to choke out other invasives and unwanteds, is to be able to mow a grassy path like this.   With out a doubt this is one of the most beautiful garden features.

  1. Matti says:

I have little experience with grasses, but the deep red foliage is striking. MAtti

  2. The red looking grass in your photos is not Pascopyrum smithii (western wheatgrass) but Andropogon gerardii (big bluestem).
