Before & After: Chris and Alyssa’s New Front Yard

January 31, 2013

before, house, landscape, yard, overgrown, front yard

When Chris and Alyssa closed on their house a few years ago, they were less than excited to be greeted by this jumble of overgrown shrubs and run of the mill river rock.  It made their new house feel unsightly and tired, and they couldn’t wait till it was gone! Choosing to venture down the DIY route, they were able to transform their yard into something they both love.

after, yard, front yard, mulch, border, transform, improve

And what a difference it made! Adding a border and replacing the drab river rocks with a bright mulch, along with swapping the disorderly shrubs for a variety of smaller plants, they created a yard that enhanced the facade of their house by a landslide. Alyssa noted that the project took them a lot longer than they had originally set out for [heh, I know how *that* goes….] but the extra time spent was well worth it. I’d love to see what it looks like now that a few years have passed! Nice job, guys!  -erin

  1. Ann of Monona says:

Not a big fan of the red mulch.

  2. Shay says:

I kind of liked the before just as much as the after but they both look good!

  3. I think a more subdued mulch could have been better because the color looks to too unnatural, but nonetheless, it looks better than before.

  4. The after is just plain ugly and artificial. It is disturbing to see something like this promoted as something better than what was there. What was there had potential. But this after is a disaster.

    • Rochelle says:

Elizabeth – I agree! I hardly remember this post – and was shocked to go back and see it when your comment came online. Part of me wants to delete it (and I may) and the other part of me is pondering the state of mind I was in when I let Erin post this? All I can say is that I wanted (and still do) to encourage everyone to get outside and do something (anything) – it is a first step. You and I might think it is ugly and horrible, but it is someone’s effort and it is an earnest one.
