Before & After: Sue Creates an Idyll Haven

A few weeks ago Laurrie, a Studio ‘g’ reader, was kind enough to point out a wonderful transformation that she saw over on a blog she frequents, called Idyll Haven. I clicked over with anticipation to see for myself, and boy am I glad I did. Sue has done an amazing job since she first started calling this place “home” back in 1995. Fast forward 17 years to 2012, and here is what her gorgeous yard has evolved to:

before and after, landscape, house, red house, lawn, yard, transformation, DIY, long term, progress, flowers, garden

Stunning, isn’t it? I really enjoy reading about landscapes that emerge slowly over time because the gardeners are always so passionate about the beautiful yards they create. All that hard work and patience when there are so many things that seem to come up– weather, time constraints, budget, life, kids…pets who dig up our newest plantings…it’s nice to know that we’re all in the same boat, more or less, and that we will eventually arrive to the destination our visions have been pulling us toward for so very long. I think Sue’s yard is a perfect example of this kind of trek. At this point, all of her plantings are well established and she has come up with a design that is quite pleasing to the eye. She really makes it look effortless, doesn’t she?

Of course, this isn’t the only part of Sue’s yard that’s been towed through the process of a mega face lift– her patio is pretty great as well. The photo in the “before” shot was taken after they finished constructing the patio.

Now her patio is practically glowing!  All that hard work really paid off– thank you for sharing your amazing yard, Sue! For anybody who is interested, you can see the rest of the photos in this post on her blog. -erin

If you have a great garden related makeover project that you would like to share with Studio ‘g’ readers please send us pictures and tell us about it.

I will never forget how blown away I was when I finally got the opportunity to visit Sues garden ‘in person’ . For me, her patio is a benchmark , and in spite of our vastly different climate zones the design of the hardscape and the flow from house to garden there is always in the back of my mind when I contemplate change in my own garden.

Wonderful example of a grand transformation.

  3. That’s fantastic. Nice work, Sue! Looks very tropical for CT. My front garden in Florida looks like this (granted, my focus is on survival plants and edibles so it’s not nearly as showy as your space):

I think yours looks more tropical than mine. Heh.
