Foosball in the Garden

July 1, 2009

Do you know what you are looking at?   Yes, that’s right, no longer available just for the basement destination ‘game room’….this foosball (or football) table can sit right out on the patio….maybe right next to the grill.  The man-cave is about to get some fresh air.

Available from RS Life.

This has me thinking….what would I put in a Man-Cave garden….ideas?

  1. Sheila H says:

Comfortable chairs, bowling alleys, big chess boards, bar, outdoor tv, poker table, fire pit to name a few. I did a design in which the homeowner built a huge swimming pool/pond. He had a old building next to it which was filled with junk. I gave him the idea of converting it into a game room/bathroom with an outdoor bar . It was a fun project!

    • rochelle says:

Yes Sheila — all those things of course….but I am thinking about plants….like scents that might be more appealing to men, or a style, color or of certain characteristics….

  2. Pat Hilty says:

Since my idea of a man cave is more like a male locker room, I suggest the following plants
    that men can relate to:
    1. Phallus impudicus – stinkhorm fungus
    2. Ceratonia siliqua – Carob tree
    3. Aristolochia clematitis or californica depending on where the cave is – Dutchman’s Pipe
    4. Plants in the Asclepiadaceae family – Stapelia gigantea – Starfish flower

  3. Lynn says:

Lots of large, dark-leafed plants, including Canna, Musa, and Dahlias. Studies of men and color indicate a preference for hot colors. I’d do the whole thing is shades of orange, red and yellow. Fun.

  4. Germi says:

I’ve done quite a few gardens for Hollywood Bachelor types, and have a plant palette that I call ‘Tough Macho Cool’. Here are are some of the greatest hits on it : Echium fatuousum, Agave americana, Aloe arborescens ‘Yellow Torch’, Salvia clevelandii ‘Pozo Blue’, Tagetes lemonii, Phormium tenax ‘Bronze’, kangaroo paws, Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’, Euphorbia wulfenii…

The palette is very Southern California (and these are usually planted on hillsides, for some reason) and REALLY high impact. Nothing subtle – lots of plant architecture. The fragrances are clean and herbal, and the flowers are not showy – although the flower spikes are (like echium; tiny flowers on a big phallic horn!) I’ve also noticed that lots of men respond to the color gray in planting schemes … hmmmm…

Great question! I love playing plant palette games!
