Crayon Garden Sculpture, Lubbock, Texas

While I find this to be stunningly beautiful as a piece of art, I can’t help but wonder about the practicality of this particular landscape installation.  Using thousands of large crayons, artist Herb Williams created a field of sculpture flames for Unwanted Visitor: Portrait of Wildfire at the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas.  My concern….will these not melt in the hot Texas sun?  Perhaps it is only temporary, it would certainly be a fantastic permanent display.

  1. I believe that that is part of the plan for the sculptures–the heat causing an ever-changing work of art. Very cool.

  2. Hey,

Love the blog, you def have a new follower.

I was wondering if you knew what kind of plants are good for heavily shaded gardens? we have a tiny tiny city garden, but it is surrounded by big oak trees which i suspect are sucking the life out of everything, couple that with it not getting an ounce of sun and me being a complete novice, i’ve no idea what to plant in there, everything from last year died.

    thanks for your help!!

Renny Ramakers Got Me Thinking

This short video about design really got me thinking…about design, my garden, and just about everything I do.  I thought it particularly good for garden-makers. (p.s. the best parts are in the second half)

The Latin Series: B is for Borealis

The Latin Series: B is for Borealis

Do you know that this past few weeks has witnessed some particularly spectacular Aurora Borealis Displays in the far north? It is apparently due to a solar storm that has been showering our atmosphere recently. The Aurora Borealis is only visible in the north and likewise ‘borealis’ in plant nomenclature refers to northern plants –…

Seasonal Spirits: Strawberry Spritz

I’d like to introduce you to Joy Flanagan.  She’s the best bartender (and it’s not just me saying that) at one of my favorite local bars.  Armsby Abbey, in Worcester, MA serves a steady stream of original and interesting dishes made with seasonal local ingredients that are always great — and the ever-changing cocktail menu…
