Garden Gallery: Higashimokoto Flower Park in Hokkaido, Japan

Are your phlox blooming yet?  In new England we are not quite there yet….but in Japan, well that is a different story.

This is Higashimokoto Flower Park in Hokkaido, Japan and this is what it looks like from mid May-mid June.  I came across it today as I was looking for more information about moss phlox.  It is quite a spectacle and it reminds me of  countless earthen reservoir dams….wouldn’t this be a fantastic way to replant after the earthworks?

The park was started and mostly built by one man, Chubachi Mr. Sueyoshi.  He began in 1947 after the war with just one plant which he built upon, spread and managed.  My Sueyoshi died in 2009 but the park is still open to visitors and creeping phlox currently cover over 10 hectares.  You can read more about it here.

Design Idea: Winter Testing

My christmas tree has not yet made it to the burn pile.  I have been moving it around the front yard (standing it up, by shoving it into a snow bank) to test out how I might like a visual masse of something here, there, or the next place….  I know, your tree is probably…

Rogers Mushrooms

I am giddy with excitement over discovering the Rogers Mushrooms website.  Since living in New England, I have increasingly become more and more aware of the bounty of mushrooms and fungi everywhere.  I am not sure if this is a particularly New England thing, or if perhaps as I get older I have become more…

Red Hot Pokers

In case you have not noticed a trend, I am being drawn to red hot colors and tropical foliage as the Maine winter comes in upon us. I am looking out the window now from my office with about 8″ of snow on the ground. I get the feeling that the snow might be here…
