Supporting a Creative Community

4/13/2009

As I am working my way through this blogging course and in fact as I have continued to develop this blog, I am having a bit of a personal creative revolution.  Running a business can, quite frankly, be a creativity killer.  Writing, reading, and surrounding yourself with other creative people on the other hand feeds me and I am so happy to have discovered the blogosphere for just that.   It is rare that I find a lot of inspiration in other garden related blogs so I am constantly perusing those of artists, interior designers, photographers, and anyone who can draw me in.   In my surfing today, I came across a particularly interesting series by Design for Mankind.   Called Dialogue – it is all about creative people talking about all the things that we don’t talk about.    Check it out.  There are some really interesting people talking about balance, finances, self discipline, family, and creative block.   I made me fell a whole lot more normal.

This is the first one…but there are a whole lot more….here.

Thanks for sharing this link. “…I haven’t taken a day off in years.” I can totally relate to that.

I’m really challenging myself to stick to a schedule or complete my task lists. But, I know I lack daily or weekly rituals and I really miss having “special” time for myself or with my husband.

How do you strive for balance? How do you know when you’re close to it or have achieved it?

Wow Alexa– that’s a thinker….first of all, while, I have plenty of comments, no one has ever engaged so much in my posts…I am inspired…and excited that you are interested in greater conversation…
do I have balance…not hardly, but I will say a lot more than I have in times passed. I learned some big lessons when I was younger about where my limits are and what it feel like when I hit them. — not so pleasant. I work and blog, that keeps me sane. I need that for myself. I know I don’t have balance when I can’t sleep at night and yell too much at my kids….when that starts to happen, which it does from time to time, I stop taking on new things and finish some things (I always have about 5 million projects (personal, professional, DIY, blogging, etc etc.) going at the same time). It feels like I have to free up some capacity. I can’t multi task like I used to…it is too distracting and as I get older I find it harder- so I have to focus on focusing. Yoga helps and so does gardening. It is satisfying and calming to look out my windows and see something serene and not chaotic.

Thanks for these great links! I ended up watching the 5 episodes in the series, and was quite inspired. I also enjoyed the tips in your previous post, for when I do have a garden someday!
