Hey There! I’m Rochelle Greayer. I’m a garden designer on TV and IRL. I’m also an author and entrepreneur who thinks she can save the world by teaching everyone a little something about landscape design.

Trend Week: Making the Outdoors More Cozy

Yet another design trend predicted by Aafje Nijman is that we will generally want to get closer to nature.  Specifically, we are increasingly wanting to be IN nature when we observe  it.   While this is leading to an increased desire to be outdoors, she claims that we are not interested in losing the comforts of the indoors.  Creating greater outdoor comfort will lead to continued additions of fireplaces, stoves, and durable furniture that offers a cozy feeling both physically and visually. The lounge area is increasingly important and the time of uncomfortable folding chairs is over! Additionally,  in terms of flooring, cheap concrete tiles and other inexpensive hardscaping will be popular as outdoor carpets are beginning to be viewed as viable options for upgrading less attractive flooring.

In this image, outdoor rugs not only cover the floor but are being used as a wall covering as well.  What do you think? I haven’t seen too many rugs in the US that have enough style for me to want to have them in my garden at all, but maybe if I had some as cute as these I might consider it on the ground.  And I do like the idea of using patterned outdoor textiles to disguise a unsightly garden feature – I just need to find the right ones.
