Sowing A Waterwise Suburban Meadow: A Plant Study

In the Autumn 2015 Issue of PITH + VIGOR we followed designer Claire Kettelkamp of Kettelkamp and Kettelkamp around a garden that she and her husband designed in Evanston, Illinois.   What resulted from a brief  that required a no maintenance, no irrigation, no chemicals and no special tools required front garden is an inventive front garden. The final design is a waterwise suburban meadow of tall grasses and a lawn that isn’t actually a lawn.  The turf lawn was replaced with a sedum lawn that is seasonally colorful and was inspired by green roof design. Loving this garden for its practicality and beauty, we’ve put together this accompanying plan to the print feature, as a season by season plant guide.

Wow. This is heavenly. So smart, so effortless looking. I would never have guessed something this intuitive and thoughtful could come from commercial landscape architects. Their portfolio is stunning. Thank you sharing this.
