Malope trifida : Annual Mallow – Flower seeds for Cutting

January 18, 2011

Once again, I have dove into the giant RHS Encyclopedia of Garden Plants to find inspiration, not only for my own garden but also for yours.   I have this thought that, perhaps with time, I might evolve my own garden into a “Cut your Own” sort of place whereby visitors can visit and take away arrangements.  I am completely in the brainstorming stages and haven’t made any real decisions or plans towards this, but nonetheless, I am intrigued whenever I come across plant that is good for cut flowers.

Malope trifida is commonly known as Mallow (not false mall or globe mallow – just annual mallow).  They generally get to about 3′ tall and have simple lobed flowers with deep veins.  As cut flowers they last for as many as 10 days.  I am adding them to my seed list as I practice growing for my someday flower farm.

If you are in Europe you can buy seeds from Sarah Raven or B and T World Seeds.

Here in the US, I have seen them at Annie annuals, and also through Thompson and Morgan.
