Garden Design Details – Black Slats

garden hut black slats patio cover from torvan via www.pithandvigor.comI am desperately trying to finish off some projects that have been carrying on for too long.  One of which is the pergola over the cobblestone patio that I laid last fall.  I have just finished putting the polymeric sand between the stones and now I need to turn my attention to the pergola that will go over the top.

I have been hashing through the design details in my head for months and I have finally settled upon a style.  Black Slats.

The house is currently very dark brown, but I am slowing getting it stained black (season by season, side by side….who says you have to paint your house all at once?)  so going black makes sense to tie everything together.

Open slats are modern but have a cottage appeal — which I think will strike a perfect balance for my quirky  1940’s house…plus they leave plenty of room to go a little glam….which I am dreaming of in my garden.

It has me thinking that maybe I need to go all black….I love the black pots (which I already have some of) and all the black accents.  This green/black color scheme works so well in Danish and Scandinavian light…I wonder if it will work in New England light?

Mulch-less Gardening With Beautiful Ground Covers

Let’s face it, anywhere you put mulch, you can dig a hole and plant ground cover. Indeed, ground cover plants are simply living mulches that don’t cost time or money to install every spring. Just like mulch they help retain soil moisture, and they keep weeds from crowding in. Ground cover also provides an extra…

The Language of Spring in A Garden Inspired Easter Tree

The old Germanic tradition of the Easter tree has made its way into modern American custom. These trees have not achieved the popularity of that other holiday tree but you know the look-colored eggs, ribbon, & branches. The 19th century Pennsylvanian Dutch adorned their homes with such a tree, most commonly a sassafras sapling that…

Holiday Wreath Inspiration

Wreaths are such ubiquitous holiday decorations, I find that most years I want to rebel against the traditional cliché of it all and just hang nothing… …but then I see beautiful creations like these and suddenly I’m trying to find billy buttons in the middle December. (I actually just one-clicked seeds for next year here: 20…
