I’m going to come right out and say it up front — this is not a pretty yard, but I am going to share it anyway, simply because I think it deserves a salute for ingenuity and resourcefulness. I just wish it was more attractive…and I am convinced it can be.
This is a derelict and disused pool in a Mesa Arizona backyard, whose owners converted it to a greenhouse/ chicken coop/ tilapia farm. Repeat – Tilapia farm – (i.e. the fixings for a great ceviche) – they grow their own fish in the deep end of the pool. It lets one family be completely self sufficient with eggs, fish and vegetables in the middle of the desert. As I said, it isn’t pretty, but there is something here to learn from and I think with a little clever design thought, it could actually be very attractive. See the whole video here.
