Landcape Hotel – Hotel Avalon – Beverly Hills, CA

April 9, 2009

I haven’t done a Landscape Hotel in a while — a little distracted with Spring.

But I am in this mid-century design mood today and the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills fits the bill. I love how the remodel of this hotel included a turning out of what were surely garden side rooms in the original 1940’s design. Now they are fabulously lit ‘cabana’ type features. The mid century aesthetic is maintained with the hourglass shaped pool and interesting furniture.

Here are a few design inspirations from this mid mod pool garden.

The Avalon Hotel was originally known as the Beverly Carlton. It was built in 1949 and has a decidedly 1950s aesthetic (by Kelly Wearstler). Marilyn Monroe once lived in an apartment suite there, and there’s a very well known photo shoot of her in and around this building. The cabanas poolside were never rooms, actually. They’ve always been intended as cabanas, and can be seen even in the background of the celebrated Marilyn Monroe photo shoot. It’s a great place to stay, in any case. I’ve been a frequent guest over the years.
