Modern Landscape Masters: Brian Mackin: Counterbalance Sculpture

CONNECT:

I work at the intersection of design, horticulture, culture, and systems—helping people and institutions think clearly, act deliberately, and create lasting impact.

One of my personal design mantras is ‘go big’ and ‘design like you mean it’ – I mean really, don’t be wimpy.
Brian Mackin means it when he throws ceramic pots that are bigger than he is. Using his whole body, he shape pieces that fit into a kiln 9 ft long and 50 inches square. Used by great hotels, restaurants and retail outlets, his forms are in great demand for both indoors and outdoor garden and landscape applications.

I love the counterbalance sculpture. It is beautiful. I have been looking for “something” for my backyard but after seeing that photo I am definitely inspired. Thank you for sharing.

I can’t imagine what it would take to throw a pot that size. I really enjoyed throwing while I was in college, but haven’t kept up with it. Thank you for sharing these pictures, they are amazing, and inspiring.
