CONNECT:

I work at the intersection of design, horticulture, culture, and systems—helping people and institutions think clearly, act deliberately, and create lasting impact.

I love the textural patchwork of this planting design.

  1. Yes, those are swathes of heaths and heathers with a few conifers , ornamental grasses and perennials thrown in.

This garden sits overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the southern Mendocino coast.

It was designed and planted about 6 or 7 years ago and continues to grow with a few more plants each year.

The most challenging problem we had during its first year of growth was keeping the wild turkeys from pulling the plants up out of the ground as they were looking for worms.
We solved the problem with motion detection impact water sprayers.

There is also a very active family of deer that walk through the garden , so everything has to be deer tolerant.
The garden is not fenced and spans about 3 acres or so.
