One more post before I head out….
Because I just can’t help myself. Britches and Hoes – who came up with that name? (I didn’t but wish I did) Fashion and Gardening — to me, it’s an irresistible mix.
I, not so secretly, want to design my own fashion line for gardeners (specifically women). It wouldn’t look like this so much, but I am finding this infinitely amusing. But it has me thinking about my imaginary fashion line….and I am wondering….if you could have some garden clothes that are fashionable, would you be interested? What features might they have? I have lots of ideas that I have chewed on for years, but I am curious if all my thoughts are completely self centered, (in that I might be only one who wants or cares about looking cute and hip while being comfortable and practical when pottering in the garden). Do you care about what you wear in the garden? Do you (like me) wish for something else to wear? What would your ideal garden clothes be like?

They look very 40s’, I am in love.
Also, what Joseph said. I wear as little as possible, because I always get filthy. Hence the name of my blog: Barefoot Gardening!
Hmm… honestly, no, I don’t much care about what I wear in the garden. Aside for a good pocket for pruners, the clothes don’t much matter to me.
Yes! I do care. Because I don’t want to wreck my good clothes, but I don’t want to look a ratty old wreck either. Gardening is too much fun to always be done in rags.
I don’t care what I wear either – just sleeveless button down shirt and shorts with a pocket in the back for my pruners. It doesn’t take long for me to get dirty! I’m thankful my husband doesn’t complain!
If I am gardening in the front yard it matters, at least that I am covered in the right areas. Backyard not so much. I can’t seem to find a pair of gardening gloves that lasts very long. They just wear out way too quick. I love the name Britches and hoes. Usually I am weeding trying to catch a few rays so Tanning Chickweed or weed frocks would fit me well.
I recently took to wearing my ariat riding boots for gardening, even in the heat. While my husband favors the “tanning” look, I need impact and scratch foot protection and secure treads. Pants should probably be light canvas, loose, but have knee reinforcements and tool loops, like painter pants. Let them get stained, and spray them for insects, but don’t wash them. Then unless pruning roses, I go lighter on top – maybe a tank top and sports bra.
However, I have been caught in the yard in my pajamas. What starts as a dawn coffee stroll is cut short by insidious weeds, and then what can you do?
I would LOVE spf treated fabrics that don’t look like the ucky ones you find at REI. SERIOUSLY! I usually wear long sleeve t’s and sunscreen and a hat and gloves….you get the picture, but all that gets really hot and heavy in the summer sun. If I could be protected without overheating, I could garden during the day without so much worry about sun exposure.
I have found that hospital scrubs work quite well. Cool, loose, with a pocket and who cares if they get dirty.
I TOTALLY want to have cuter clothes for gardening. I spend most of my time working outdoors and hate that I always look frumpy or mannish. I don’t put on makeup or do my hair for the garden, but damn I’d love to be able to show off my a$$ while I’m at the garden.
I believe that you can wear practical and comfortable garden gear whilst looking good at the same time. Good gardening clothes are like having the right tool for the right job, so whilst nurturing your garden don’t forget to care for yourself. Dress appropriately, cover up from the sun, avoid pure cotton as it acts like a sponge and absorbs moisture, buy the best boots you can afford to protect the pounding your feet take whilst digging and wear what makes you happy! I get my garden clothes from GeoWear, some great gear and really stylish too!
