Americorps, in my mind is perhaps one of the most extraordinary programs available to the young people of our country. Were I not a mom tied to so many things, I would sign myself right up….oh to be young and free again. So when I read over the weekend about the recent kick off of a 16 month planning period for an Americorps spin-off program called Food Corps, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Food corps is a program to use AmeriCorps service members to build and tend school gardens and developing Farm to School programs for public schools around the country.
I have no idea what I can do to help, but if you are interested you too can go sign up to get involved. I can’t imagine that a bunch of landscape architects, designers, gardeners, horticulturists, and generally landscape enthusaistic people (like I know you all are) wouldn’t be of huge help to the small group of people that are pulling this together.
I am excited to lend my own experince as a gardener, designer, mom, school garden starter, and farmers market manager to this great effort to teach our children how to grow their food and feed themselves in a better way. What can you offer? I am sure you have some skills or experiences that could help the effort. Please consider heading over to the Food Corps site to get involved.
