Clayettes for Stylish Harvest Storage

9/23/2009

I had to enlist the help of babelfish this morning.  (have you ever used it? –it helps a ton with translating web  pages in other languages).  It is harvest time here in the Northern Hemisphere and across the way at my neighbor’s orchards, the peaches, nectarines, blueberries and raspberries are waning, but the apples are coming into full swing.  Harvard, MA is an apple town and fall in New England is simply stunning.  The leaves are barely starting to change and we have weeks still before it will be in full swing, but with the apples coming on, I am in harvest mode.

Do you know what a clayette is?  I didn’t so I turned to babelfish and google.  A clayette is a wooden palette used to mature and store fruits and vegetables.

This one though, has been re-imagined by Designer Godefroy de Virieu.  Called the Arbre d’hiver (my babelfish translation is tree d’ winter) it is beautifully used to store fruit – namely apples and pears.  It is availabe from the very cool french store Botanique Editions.
