Before & After: A California Yard Gets a New Look

July 11, 2013

before, ranch, landscape, front yard, makeover, dead tree

Last week I opened my inbox and found a wonderful email from one of our readers. It was a collection of landscape photos along with a story about a front yard overhaul that’s been going on for a few years now. It always makes me feel a little better about my own endeavors any time I read about a makeover that takes a few years, because pretty much all my own projects take a few years and it makes me feel so slow! I’m learning that it’s normal. Anyway, I liked what I saw so I thought I’d show you guys too.

after, landscape, front yard, ranch, red house, sidewalk, path, gardens,

Spurred by the loss of a beautiful 25 year old peach tree, Debbie and her husband took the opportunity to turn their front yard into something that offered easy access to the front door as well as better curb appeal. The timing for grass removal couldn’t have been better with the city’s new water meters that were going in, and although I’m always sad when a mature tree dies suddenly, I think these guys definitely made the best of it. The new yard is wonderfully inviting and makes the house feel much more open and welcoming. Oh! And I even noticed the neighbors painted their exterior as well…bonus! Thanks so much for the email, Debbie! The house is looking great. -erin

Thanks for the feature, Erin! I’ve never done a before and after post, so I think I will share this one. Wow, the before and after is such a change! We miss the peach tree, especially now when we could be stepping outside each morning for a huge juicy peach to eat for breakfast. The whole street ate peaches for breakfast since they were too fragile to save.
We plan to completely remove the lawn as the maintenance becomes too much, rather than hire a lawn service.
I can’t wait to see the newer plantings fill in. We love our new look with all the colorful foliage. Looking forward to finding just the right furniture to welcome neighbors to our new sitting area.
    Thanks again!

  2. Looks fantastic. It’s so funny because before I read the article (and just looked at the photos) I thought to myself…I love everything about the AFTER except I would have kept the tree. Obviously, you feel the same way (now that I read the article). Great work! It looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Looks really nice, welcoming and open now. Sad to hear about the peach tree, homegrown peaches are the best! I like the little dashes of colour, and that was great that the neighbors painted their house!
