I’m always looking for new photography inspiration for plants and flowers. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes find the ubiquitous and standard macro shots of garden blooms get a little boring. I love the flowers and I love to see them in all their glorious beauty, but I also love when the photographer can layer in a heavy dose of creativity to make the images more special.
Nick Knight- Photographer
Have you heard of Nick Knight? Even if you don’t recognize the name, you have probably seen some of his provocative images on the covers of Vogue or other fashion magazines over the last few decades. He is one of the world’s most famous and recognizable photographers. He is exciting, and he always pushes the boundaries both creatively and technically.
The crossover is always endlessly appealing to me. I find it so inspiring, personally, to get out of my genre and I find it equally inspiring to watch other creatives cast out from their comfort zone and regular practices and delve into a different medium or application.
Nick Knight is a fashion photographer, but over on his Instagram, he also shares photos of the roses in his garden. They are everything you expect from such a talented photographer. They beautifully capture the ethereal nature of these flowers and draw you in with their beauty. I want to bury my face in them in much the same way that I am drawn to burying my face in the beautiful fragrance of roses in my garden.
But even more, the technical details are fascinating. I can’t help but wonder how he creates that mood and how the flowers get in the floaty positions that they are in (without obvious support). Also – the luminescent lighting is something that I am obsessed with breaking down and trying to recreate. Reverse engineering might be one of my favorite hobbies.
After all, trying to recreate the creative work of others is one of the best ways to not only learn something new but find ways to create your own original work.
