This next transformation is probably one of my all-time favorites, partly because I love side yards but mostly because it’s just so gorgeous. Landscape Designer Shirley Bovshow came up with amazing side yard makeover a few years ago for a client living in Los Angeles. What used to be a narrow tunnel that wasn’t much more than a dusty walkway to the other side of the house quickly became a lovely oasis, filled with romantic charm.
Shirley designed this gorgeous space on-site and pulled in a few recycled materials give it a unique feel. The stepping stones are actually just pieces of salvaged concrete, but they look so much nicer than what comes to mind when you hear “recycled concrete” don’t they? She lined the path with lavender, ornamental grasses, tree roses, vines and elfin thyme, along with a few other perennials, and hung a small pendant light from the beautifully aged metal arch. Oh, and she even managed to add a few fruit trees! You should head over to her blog and check out the rest of her transformation- it’s truly amazing! There are lots of great photos and I think you’ll be able to pull a few ideas away for yourself! –erin

Sometimes, I am so jealous of California gardeners! I have seen some lovely “do-over” side yard projects in California. I would love to see some great ones from New England.
I agree Amy –always wishing there was more going on in our neck of the woods….there are some lovely gardens no doubt….but the overall level of interest in doing smaller but realy fabulous projects does seem lower. As a designer, and someone in the industry– I always try to think of ways to help change that.
